Fostering Engineering Habits of Mind: Encouraging Elementary Students to Think Like Engineers

In this online webinar, participants will develop familiarity with EiE’s Engineering Habits of Mind and practice identifying them in action by observing videos of EiE lessons in the elementary classroom.

Registrants will receive an email with the link to join on the day of the event.

*Please note: this session will be capped at the first 100 participants. The room will open 15 minutes prior to the start time so arrive early to ensure your space!*

About this Event:

What happens when you ask your students to solve a problem for which they don’t already know the answer? Students who have developed “engineering habits of mind” can draw from a mental toolkit of problem-solving strategies. In this live, online webinar, you’ll learn about the 16 engineering habits of mind identified by Engineering is Elementary® (EiE), and how you can help students develop these positive habits, which support learning across the curriculum.

This one-hour interactive session starts with an introduction to EiE, a curriculum for grades 1–5. You’ll review candid video clips of elementary students engaged in engineering to identify the strategies they’re employing, then identify and discuss the connections between EiE’s engineering habits of mind and student learning. You’ll take time to reflect on how your students may already be building engineering habits of mind, and how you can continue to support them in applying these ways of thinking. You’ll leave with a helpful “Engineering Habits of Mind” observation sheet to use in your classroom.

This is a pilot made possible by a Global Impact Grant from Cisco Systems, Inc. We are working to collect data on this experience to improve future sessions and upon completion of the session you will be sent a follow up survey. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!

EiE® is the award-winning curriculum division of the Museum of Science, Boston. Our research-based, hands-on PreK-8 STEM curricula introduce learners to the engineering design process and create the next generation of problem solvers. Our in-school, after school, families and STEM nights programs empower elementary students to think creatively as they identify and solve challenges in a real-world context. ALL students can work together to find creative solutions and discover their inner engineer.
