September 18 is National iSTEM Day! The new holiday, launched last year by our friends at the STEM Leadership Alliance, is a celebration of the advancement of STEM learning.
For students and educators, it’s a chance to explore real-world examples in hands-on STEM activities across different subject areas. For families, iSTEM day is a great opportunity to raise awareness of integrated STEM learning and practice these lessons at home.
National iSTEM Day was founded on three guiding principles for successful integrated STEM learning:
• Integrated STEM involves a collaboration across all content areas of STEM.• Integrated STEM must have real connections.
• Integrated STEM must be connected to real world examples.
In celebration, we’re giving away a free Engineering is Elementary Digital Storybook and corresponding Try It! Design Challenge Kit, for one lucky educator*! The storybooks are designed with young learners in mind, with engaging characters and colorful illustrations -- in addition to amazing and diverse science, technology, engineering themes. And, each individually packaged Try It! Kit includes all the materials needed for one child to complete a fun, mini design challenge, just like the character in the storybook!
The digital storybooks also serve as the foundation of our new Engineering and Computer Science Essentials: An Integrated Program for grades 1-5. This innovative program brings together science, engineering and computer science practices to build real world problem-solving skills and promote access, equity, and STEM excellence through fun and engaging lessons.
